Product Review: Lifeway Frozen Kefir (Original)

This stuff?  F*cking phenomenal.  Really.

Well, if you like tart frozen yogurt like Pinkberry.  This stuff tastes just like Pinkberry original, maybe even better.  It’s good for digestive health too (BONUS!).  As someone with tummy troubles that could benefit from some probiotic magic, the benefits from eating this is two-fold: it’s great taste that borders on pleasureable and some help in the digestion department.  I am a much bigger fan of this than the drinkable Kefir which I find to be chalky and thick.

It’s nearly impossible to keep this in the fridge for more than a couple of days after it’s opened.  Every time I wear near the fridge I want to some.  When Whole Foods has it one sale I stock up.  At any given time I might have a couple different flavors going in the fridge.  This is definitely the best one though.  Strawberry is good too, but mango isn’t.  I have yet to try the Pomegranate flavor.

I’ve turned many friends onto it and for that they are thankful.  And they’ve turned their friends onto it.  It’s a big Frozen Kefir Love Fest and I started it!  Awesome.

One of the best things in the world, no exaggeration.

Product Review: Ben & Jerry’s Red Velvet Cake

Red velvet cake has been my favorite cake flavor for as long as I can remember.  What is not to love about the beautiful deep red cake with cocoa notes topped with tasty cream cheese frosting?  Beautiful and delicious.  I was overjoyed when I found out that Ben & Jerry’s made this delectable looking flavor of ice cream.  I am a fan of most of their ice creams and had high expectations…

And I was disappointed.  I opened the container to find the base more of a strawberry pink than the deep rich red I expected to see.  Nothing that resembled any process of making red velvet cake.  I’ve made red velvet cake many times before and the color is slighty different in batter phase to baked phase.  Oh well.  Maybe the flavor will be more representative.  Nope.  The base was way too sweet, the chunks of “cake” didn’t taste like any red velvet I have ever had and on top of that they had an off-putting texture of chewy gumdrops.  The kind that get stuck in your teeth.

C’mon, Ben & Jerry’s.  You can do a lot better than this.

Product Review: Blue Bunny Premium I Do! Wedding Cake Ice Cream

I recently had an amazing Wedding Cake cupcake at Sugar Bakery in East Haven, Connecticut.  They were winners of Food Nework’s Cupcake Wars and it was very easy to see why.  Man, oh man, was that cupcake good.  Today I was doing some grocery shopping and came across this flavor in the freezer section next to the Ben & Jerry’s and Haagen Daz.  It brought me right back to the cupcake that I had and I was intrigued.  So, I bought it and immediately opened it to sample when I got home.

This flavor is a true winner with a sweet butter cream base and white cake pieces with ribbons of raspberry sauce running all through it.  The base had a nice taste without being overly sweet, the cake pieces were good and actually tasted like cake, and the perfect amount of tart raspberry sauce contrasted nicely with the slighty sweet base.

Delightful.
